National Concert Hall, Dublin

RTÉ Concert Orchestra
Karen Ní Bhroin, conductor
Michael Seaver, clarinet
Macdara Ó Seireadáin, basset horn
Presented by Liz Nolan, RTÉ lyric fm

This final RTÉ Concert Orchestra 2024 Summer Lunchtime concert promises a soul-stirring delight, with a programme including the moving Overture by Bacewicz, Borodin’s symphonic poem In the Steppes of Central Asia, and concert pieces from Mendelssohn.

Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz’s Overture was written during the Nazi occupation of Poland in World War II and remains a defiant outcry and an exhilarating piece.

One of the most celebrated figures of the early Romantic Period, Mendelssohn is also included in the programme; the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, with woodwind players Michael Seaver and Macdara Ó Seireadáin, play delightful concert pieces No. 1 and No. 2 on clarinet and basset horn.

Excerpts from Dvořák’s Slavonic Dances, influenced by styles and forms from Bohemia, will also be performed, showcasing their dazzling intensity and folk-dance elegance.

But what does it take to lead an orchestra in the 21st century? That is the question we will be asking on this 6-day course.

Éna Brennan: No way Out

Beware! The well is poisoned. The sea is infected. Everything has been consumed. Lamentation is too late. Guilt has no positive outcome. An opera about a dystopian world affected by some form of destructive force.

This intimate new opera by the multi-talented Éna Brennan (aka Dowry) — composer, arranger, violinist and graphic designer — is a statement of horror and protest in response to the destruction of our environment. Breathwork, with a text by Olivier award-winning director David Pountney, offers a foretaste of a larger operatic collaboration that will premiere at Austria’s Bregenz Festival next year.

Running time 15-20 minutes.
Six performances daily.

Sung in English.

‘Breathwork’ is a companion work to a larger composition ‘Hold Your Breath’ by Éna Brennan and David Pountney which has been commissioned by Bregenzer Festspiele

Galaxies In Her Eyes will make its world debut at the High Point University Culp Planetarium on April 1, 2, and 3, 2022.

This short, family-friendly opera tells the story of a young girl who dreams of going to the stars. She imaginatively weaves together the stories of astronomical pioneers Annie Jump Cannon, Katherine Johnson, and Ada Lovelace, whose work helps to make that journey possible. Across time and space, she discovers a sisterhood of science which is defined by collaboration, perseverance, a fascination with the unknown – and the importance of doing your math homework.

Galaxies In Her Eyes is made possible by generous support from the HPU Department of Music, the Winston-Salem Symphony, The National Science Foundation, the HPU Cultural Programs Committee, and the Stephen and Linda Stone family.

Synopsis: 12-year-old Eden, a math and science whiz, dreams of travelling to Mars. But her dreams get derailed when she loses her mother unexpectedly. In the midst of her despair, a young Ada Lovelace appears with her flying machine designs, preparing to visit her own convalescing mother. Applying their math and science skills, Eden and Ada journey through space and time to find their mothers. Their adventures lead them to famed scientists Katherine Johnson and Annie Jump Cannon, who help them on their quest using their groundbreaking discoveries that changed the world. The opera concludes as adult Eden awakens on Mars.
